History enthusiasts are being encouraged to attend a p

British Museum Curator Heading to Hartlepool History enthusiasts are being encouraged to attend a private view and one-off lecture taking place at the Museum of Hartlepool this month. Ilona Regulski, Curator of Egyptian Written Culture at the British Museum, will be delivering the lecture ‘Signs of Writing. Scribal Culture in Ancient Egypt’ on Friday 21st April from 6pm. The free lecture will elaborate on the thinking behind the current museum exhibition ‘Writing for Eternity: Decoding Ancient Egypt’ and will provide background on the principles by which the ancient Egyptians made their language visible. Ancient Egypt has produced an astonishing variety of written material in its great temples, on the walls of the tombs of Pharaohs, and inscriptions on sculpture, jewellery, pottery, funerary artefacts and manuscripts, telling over 4000 years of history. The exhibition tells the story of a multi-cultural society in which indigenous and foreign languages coexisted. Deciphering these scripts has allowed scholars to start solving the mysteries of this ancient civilization. Anna Dodgson, Cultural Officer (Museums and Exhibitions) at Hartlepool Borough Council, says: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Ilona here at the Museum of Hartlepool next month to teach us about this visual language that used symbols to communicate, something many people are exploring today through modern day emoji’s. We really hope that people in the North East come and listen to Ilona’s talk and discover the ways in which we have decoded the ancient messages left for us by people living thousands of years ago”. The exhibition is supported through the generosity of the Dorset Foundation. For more information about the lecture please visit Destination Hartlepool or contact Anna Dodgson, Cultural Officer (Museums and Exhibitions) for further information on (01429) 523428.
